Updates

It's been a while since I updated, so I'll give a little rundown on the family at the beginning (or close to the beginning) of 2012:

Spencer: Is enjoying kindergarten. He often gets off the bus and tells me who made bad choices that day (Colin and Nicholas - I've heard lots about you!). His class went to the planetarium twice this month and he really enjoyed it. He saved his star pajamas to wear until the night of the planetarium trip. He is into the Civil War and asks lots of questions. Two nights in a row I found James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom on his bed. Not exactly light reading for a 5-year-old who can't even read yet. We went to the library and checked out a few books on the Civil War and have been reading through those together, but they're still a little over his head. How do you explain Slavery, States' Rights, Shipping Blockades, and all of the battles to a 5-year-old? He sometimes just asks, "Was he good or bad?" when talking about the different leaders. It's hard to make it that simple, sometimes. Does North=Good and South=Bad? Not necessarily, but how do you explain that to someone so sweet and innocent? Anyway, I'm proud of his inquisitive mind and want to encourage it. Maybe I see here a need to write a kindergarten-level book of history on the Civil War. Not just on Abraham Lincoln's hat, but the actual Civil War. Someday.

He went to a birthday party on Saturday and wanted to write a note for the top of it.
It says "Spencer. Habe brfdau Mase."  So sweet. He wrote it all by himself.

Marshall: Is going to preschool two days a week and really likes it. The other three days he goes with me and Hannah to the YMCA and plays at child watch. He likes it and he's a good sport about going. He always seems happy to see me and is excited to watch a show when we get home and I get in the shower. His picture just appeared on a new Fisher-Price toy - the DC Superfriends Jokermobile. I bought two of them and opened one. It's actually very annoying - don't buy it. But look at the box - so cool! He also did a tub shot with them on Thursday that went well. They said they got the best shots of the day with him. But there was a mom model in the shot. Not sure how I feel about that. I don't know her, but I don't like her.

He loves puzzles and memory and will play them for a long time, often singing to himself a line from the same song over and over again. Yesterday it was "Choose the Right" and then "Jingle Bells." He will also often come up to you and give kisses, often on your hand. He's a sweet boy and we love him so much.

Hannah: She is such a sweetheart. She gives the best kisses and hugs. She finally started walking at 17 1/2 months. At her 15 months doctor appointment, when she wasn't walking, the doctor said we would start worrying at 18 months. As that appointment creeped closer, I started to freak out a little. But she finally did it, and she is so proud of herself. I think she might have delayed the walking just so I could pretend she was little for longer. She seems so much bigger now that she's walking. And she talks quite a bit now. She says: Momma, Dadda, Milk, Juice, No, Yes, What, Why, Banana, Down, Spencer, Marshall, Bus, Go, Coat, Shoes, Socks, Bed, Cat, Dog, and the sounds for Cat, Dog, Monkey, Cow, Horse, Frog and Sheep. Sher learns more every day. And she LOVES Dora the Explorer. She dances when the theme song comes on, she knows all the characters, and she gets a huge smile on her face. And she loves her brothers. Here's a picture of Spencer and Hannah playing. I think Hannah had put the pig on the monkey's back.

Megan: I sometimes feel like I'm just trying to make it to the end of the day. Life is good, but busy. I feel like my name "Mom" is repeated about 1000 times/day, sometimes by three kids at the same time repeatedly. I try to work out 3-4 times/week, and I can tell when I don't. I'm much crabbier. I just wish I could quell my sweet tooth - I love treats and have a hard time giving them up. I teach piano to 4 students and really enjoy that - it's fun to teach them a new and valuable skill and see them progress each week. And I'm on the Amherst Historic Preservation Commission, which I really enjoy. I hope that we can make a difference and preserve and teach others about the historically valuable properties in our town.

So that's us in a nutshell. Happy 2012!
